I am not sure when Dad first learned to be a photographer, but as a biologist, he had the need and opportunity to develop as one (no pun intended). He took a variety of types of shots: scenery, historic, animals, plants, family, and more. Below are some from a trip out west that he, mom, Lou, and Bruce took in July 1974. I am not sure why I didn’t go since I didn’t have a summer job, though I did have a new girlfriend (Marcia).

Yellowstone + Missouri rivers
The scene above is near Fort Union Trading Post, where we see the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. This is near the border of Montana and North Dakota, about 25 miles from Williston, ND. One of the enjoyable things about going on trips as a kid is that we stopped at scenic places and appreciated the beauty.

Fort Buford
Fort Buford was near Fort Union, and you can learn more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Buford. I appreciated Dad taking us to sites of historic significance.

marmot
The photo above is of a marmot. Dad would take time to help us try to see the animals that he observed and then tell us the name and more details. Since he isn't here, you can go to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmot

Bear grass and Dad
The concept of a selfie was not yet created in 1974, at least not popularized (and certainly not the word). This was likely taken by Mom, Lou, or Bruce. Dad is standing next to some bear grass.

trillium
The flower above is called a trillium and the shot was taken in Glacier National Park.

Indian paint brush
This is another flower, called the Indian paint brush, and was also taken in Glacier National Park.

mountain goat
The shot above is of a mountain goat, also taken in Glacier National Park

Bruce and Mom
Here is a shot of Bruce and Mom taken in Glacier National Park while they were hiking up a trail.
