Family Stories

A potpourri of stories about various family members or events, written by others and edited by me.

Chicago World Fair - 1933

[This is an item that my grandfather Jesse Hibbard wrote, and typed, likely between 1968 and his death in 1981. My (Al) role was to first transcribe it, next to add corrections or clarifications [within brackets], and then to add links to people connected to me (that gives more information), links to give more information about places, and for those mentioned but not connected, I sometimes added links to FamilySearch.org.]

In the fall of 1933 we went to the World's Fair in Chicago. We were there about 5 days. We spent a total of about $ 25.00.

The car was full when we started from home, and on the way back it turned over 1100 miles about 2 miles S.E, of Cable.

We filled the car at Cable, and had used a total of 55 gal. at a total cost of $6.55. Most places gasoline was 12 cents per gal.

In Chicago we stayed with a former St.C. family, so had no hotel bills.

J.E.Hibbard.

In 1933 hogs were selling for $3.50 per 100 1bs., or #[$] 7.00 for a 200 1b. hog.

Now a 200 lb. hog would bring about $95, and 55 gal. of gasoline costs about $65. so things are a little better on the farm now than in 1933.

Comments: Cable used to be a community adjacent to U.S. 10 about 6 miles SE of St. Cloud and about 2 miles south of the Jesse Hibbard farm. See the link above when first mentioned.
