[This is an item that my grandfather Jesse Hibbard wrote (and typed) in 1970. My (Al) role was to first transcribe it, next to add corrections or clarifications [within brackets], and then to add links to people connected to me (that gives more information), links to give more information about places, and for those mentioned but not connected, I sometimes added links to FamilySearch.org.]

Strange Incidents, and little tales - J.E.H
13. (written Dec. 9, '10.) One day in June, summer of 1910, while I was working for Mike Bretz I had a little adventure with a striped gopher. I had gone out into the old stable afer dinner (we were working on the North Farm) and laid down on the straw. I very nearly fell asleep, but was aroused by hearing a small animal running over the straw. I looked cautiously in the direction of the sound and saw a striped gopher within 8 feet of me. He was looking at me wonderingly and I lay for several minutes without stirring. I knew that if I moved he would run. The little animal seemed very curious to know what I was. After regarding me awhile and occasionally moving, he ran out the door. He then looked at me thru a hole for several minutes to see if I would stir when he was out of sight, I suppose. I could see his bright little eyes and part of his head thru the hole and I never moved. Finally he ran away. I thot he displayed a great deal of intelligence in trying to see me without being seen.
