Services Held August 23 for George Smith

Funeral services for George J. Smith, 72, Mahnomen, were held Saturday, August 23, from the Mahnomen Congregational church with the Rev. Carl E. Clausen officiating. Mr. Smith died August 19 at a Mahnomen hospital.

A ladies chorus provided special music at services with Mrs. K.O. Johnstad as organist. Interment was at Riverside Memorial Park, Mahnomen, with Roger Pearson, Stanley Ryant, George Kremple, K.O. Johnstad, Ray Schnell and Dr. A.P. Eckel as pallbearers. The Mattson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Flag presentation at the burial was made by the Mahnomen American Legion Post.

Mr. Smith wasborn March 17, 1897, at Matlock, Iowa, the son of the late Jacob and Tena Smith. He attended high school at Moorhead and later attended Moorhead State and Duluth State Colleges. He was married to the former Eva Goodale, June 8, 1923, at Crookston.

Mr. Smith had served as superintendent of schools at Vining, Holt, Birchdale, Indus, Littlefork and Campbell in Minnesota; Mina S. Dak., and Oak Creek, Colo. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I.

During World War II he worked as an electrician for three years in Alaska. From 1957 to 1967, during which time he made his home at Mahnomen, he was a representative for United Chemical Company, Minneapolis. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.

His wife survives as do a son, Donald, Baltimore, Md., and four daughters, Mrs. Edmund (Virginia) Hibbard, St. Cloud; Mrs. Arthur (Vivian) Ladwig, Des Moines, Ia.; Mrs. Ray (Dorothy) Neumann, Campbell, and Mrs. Robert (Donna) Walker, Princeton.

Other survivors are two brothers, the Rev. Jackson Smith, Minneapolis; and Jacob, Malaga, Spain; three sisters, Mrs. Tarkel (Mae) Tweet and Mrs. Ole (Mathilda) Austad, Klamath, Ore., and Mrs. Robert (Ethel) Soderholm, Culver City, Calif. and 20 grandchildren.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
