Trip to A & B S - Vt Aug. 12, 1969 [T] Aug. 31 [Sep 1]
We started from St. Cloud about 8:00, ate lunch in the car. When we got to Lake Michigan the kids & Ed all went swimming. It was windy & cool (68 degrees) but they really enjoyed it. We stopped by a bridge later & let kids roam around. Then stopped to see the Macinack Bridge [sic, Mackinac Bridge] and camped for the night nearby. Wrote a card to Bruce. On way back to camp we saw bridge up close. There are many candy stores.
Aug. 13 [W]
We saw the locks in Sault Ste Marie. On into Canada. We saw many hitchhikers. On inquiry, we discovered all the mines & labor were on strike. The roads are under construction, so going is slow. We saw the nickle [sic, nickel] mines in Sudbury. Found blueberries on stop at noon. The roads had big rocks beside them, some as big as a car.
We got to Ottawa about 2:30 [A.M.] & walked around the parliament bldg. for a 1/2 hr. Saw a fountain with flames - hot water - around were all the provinces' shields or symbols. On to 30 miles from Montreal where we stopped the car & slept for a while - At 6:00 we were on our way to Montreal & Expo.
Aug. 14 [R]
Visited expo after breakfast in the parking lot by the Metro. Very spectacular. So tired with little sleep. Drove 50 miles before we found a campground at Philipsburg.
Aug. 15 [F]
Dropped Ed off at Univ. of Burlington. Asked at gas station & found out about campground nearby. Got a spot (54) & set up tent & cleaned up a bit before I picked up Ed for lunch. After lunch he had meeting again. I cleaned the car & camper. In the eve. I went with him to a meeting.
Aug 16th [Sa] Jesse's birthday. Ed sent cards to Jesse & Millie [Teders?] Went with Ed to a boring lecture in P.M. Went shopping - got wine, ice, etc for weekend. We looked around town in evening. Saw ferry come in. Had chicken barbeque for supper. Real good.
Sunday 17 Went on field trip to Proctor Maple Research farm - studied maple sugar industry. Then went to Smugglers Notch - very scenic area - Ed went on bus but did help me drive some. Went to Mt. Mansfield where we took a chairlift to the summit to check on arctic plants.
Mon. 18 Rainy - kids got wet - Had to dry sleeping bags. Went to opening session with Ed & to coffee hr. - In P.M. I shopped & washed clothes. Wine with Ed & Mary Anne Mastiller Erie, Pa
Tues. 19 Went to Shelburne Museum - Quite good. Went to Othello in eve. with Mary Ann M. & Ed. So lucky to get seats.
Wed. 20 Showed kids [U of Vt] campus & Museum. Shopped downtown. Got presents for all except Bruce. Got to campground & received a message to call Western Union - called Mahnomen - Dad died last night - Carufels came to camp - about 3:00 Caye & I checked about plane flights. In evening Ed & I & Louie & Caye spent 2 hours trying to get a reservation for me. Finally got one - Albany 1:00 P.M. Fri.
Thurs 21 Ed & Louie went to meetings & Caye & I took the kids to see Ft. Ticonderodga [sic, Ticonderoga]. Had a kabob dinner & baked apples. Good but took time & Ed was crabby. Sang around fire in evening & people from Quebec sang with us & we talked some.
Friday 22. We got up early & made breatfast & got on our way to Albany by 8:00 A.M. Got on plane at 12:30 - Mohawk to Kennedy Airport in NYC. Had a 3 hr. wait until 5:00 Took N.W. Airlines to Fargo. Stopped at Detroit & Chicago & Fgo. Art met me. Very tired.
Sat. 23 Funeral at 1:00. Went to see Dad at 11:00 & then had dinner at church at 11:30. Just after we were done eating & were about to take pictures, Jesse & Bruce arrived. Bruce was my shadow all P.M. In eve. everyone left & Don & Fonda moved into Mom's house. They all took me to Airport. Caught flight at 11:40. Got to Mpls & went to Chicago where I had a 5 hr layover. Got to Boston 10:15 A.M. & was by Ed, Louie Carufel & boys. We went to Hicklings & from there to Crane Beach at Ipswich, the home of John Updike, author of "The Couples". Very tired. Slept on beach some.
While I was home for the funeral, the rest went to see Bob & Joyce Teders in their cabin north of Canajoharie, Pleasant Lake. They got to Northboro Sat. eve.
Monday 25 - went to Boston Commons - Freedom Trail. Mark, Paul, & Kaye went along. Saw the Constitution. Showed slides in the eve. Skip came home late.
Tues 26 Ed & boys went to Harvard. Caye & I went to antique shops. A dealer friend of Cayes came along. I bought a picture frame - Looked for small cream can but no luck. Got my hair done in P.M. In evening Louie & Caye & Ed & I were invited to a clam bake. Their place was fantastic - 3 acres. Big fire place of rock with grate - Benches on 3 sides with holes for drilled for cribbage. Three fire places - Also volleyball place. The host had his basement fixed up like a barn. He gave me a cream can - no cover -
Wed 27 Went to Baltimore - Got mixed up near Don's place & had to call.
Thurs [28] Went to Washington. Ed worked in museum all P.M. Showed kids around.
Friday 28 [sic, 29] Went to Wash. again - Ken & I went to Hist. & Tech. bldg & Air space bldg. Ed finished work about 1:30. Took kids to Arlington, then Ed dropped Louie off at Museum & Al, Becky & I shopping. I got Don & Fonda a serving wheel for relishes, etc. Also, raincoat for Bruce. And wine for Fonda. Showed a few slides.
Sat. 29 [30] On way home. Stopped at Gettysburg for couple of hours. Driving through Pa, W.Va & Ohio we kept passing a gold colored Porsche - the last time we waved & saw him no more until after dark a car passing honked. It was he!
We stayed in a hotel in Richmond, Ind. A grand old hotel in its day. Ken, Ed & I & the others slept in the car.
Sun. 30 [sic 31] All was fine until we got within a couple of miles from Des Moines. We had a flat with our leaky tire. It was the rim we discovered. We stayed with Viv & Art overnight.
Mon. 31 [sic, Sep 1] Got tire changed - no - off rim. Another flat outside of Ames. A hiway patrol man helped us again. Got to St. Cloud about 5:45, ate & went to Fargo in old Pontiac. Ed Stayed in St. Cloud for a few days.
