[This is an item that my grandfather Jesse Hibbard wrote (and typed) in 1970. My (Al) role was to first transcribe it, next to add corrections or clarifications [within brackets], and then to add links to people connected to me (that gives more information), links to give more information about places, and for those mentioned but not connected, I sometimes added links to FamilySearch.org.]

Strange Incidents, and little tales - J.E.H
4. Once I stabbed a skunk with my pocket knife. I had gone to look at the trap a horse-back [distance behind him, I think]. I tried to kill the skunk with the butt of my whip, but he shot me all over, nearly including my left eye. Oh, how that eye pained! I have been unable to see clearly ever since. After hopping around and rubbing my eye a moment, I drew my knife, knelt down, turned the skunk over on his back and stabbed him several times in the breast causing the blood to flow freely. In a a moment he lay still. I carried him home on the horse, Black Nell. That was in the fall of 1905, I think. [age 12] I got 5ยข for his skin.
